Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer — Coast Controls, Inc.

Sarasota, FL | On-Site | Full-Time | $70,000–$88,000/year

The Opportunity

If you're a mechanical engineer tired of designing just a small part of a product and never seeing it completed, this isn't that job. At Coast Controls, you'll be responsible for the mechanical design of entire machines, from a customer's initial sketch to a fully operational system rolling off our production line. We build roll-to-roll converting and web alignment equipment used by manufacturers nationwide, and every engineer here can point to a machine on a customer's floor and say, "I built that."

You'll join a small, hands-on engineering team, working alongside another mechanical engineer at a similar career stage, with direct access to our owner, who is also a mechanical engineer, for the more complex decisions. This isn't a role where you report five layers up; it's a position where good design work is recognized immediately.

We are a 16-person team, which means your ideas won't get lost in committee; they will be built. We also implement a four-day, ten-hour workweek because we believe engineers do their best thinking when they are not burnt out chasing a fifth day.

What You'll Own

  • Design and build the machines our customers depend on — unwinds, rewinds, tension control, slitting systems, web guides, and precision rollers. From concept through final production
  • Turning customer needs into working equipment, partnering directly with customers and our sales team to design solutions that solve their problem, not just meet a spec
  • Keep projects moving from design through engineering calculations, detailed drawings, and factory acceptance testing. You'll see your work through to the finish line, not hand it off halfway
  • Bridge mechanical and electrical by working closely with our controls vendor to make sure every system integrates cleanly
  • Be the person the shop floor calls when a build needs a second set of eyes. You'll support assembly, installation, and troubleshooting, not just hand off drawings and disappear
  • Collaborate with our other mechanical engineer on design reviews and problem-solving. Two engineers who can bounce ideas off each other, not one person working in a silo
  • Keep vendors accountable by ensuring the right components are quoted, sourced, and delivered on time

What You'll Need (Must-Haves)

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • 3–5 years of experience as a design engineer, ideally with machine or equipment design
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, and production techniques (manual/CNC machining, welding, assembly)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to own a project independently
  • Comfortable splitting time between an office and the shop floor

Nice to Have (Not Dealbreakers)

  • Experience specifically in web processing, converting, or roll-to-roll equipment
  • Hands-on machining or assembly experience
  • FEA analysis experience

Why Coast Controls

  • You'll actually be seen. At a 16-person company, your work isn't a line item; it's a machine with your fingerprints on it. Our owner (himself a mechanical engineer) knows your name and your work.
  • You won't be on an island. You'll work alongside another mechanical engineer at a similar stage in their career, a real collaborator, not a solo desk in the corner.
  • Your time is respected. A 4-day, 10-hour workweek means real weekends, not a fifth day you're too tired to use.
  • We're stable, not stagnant. Established in 1992, Coast Controls has grown every year by investing in real R&D for our products and not chasing trends.

Benefits that show up when you need them:

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Simple IRA with a dollar-for-dollar match up to 3%
  • Three weeks (120 hours) of PTO, accruing from day one
  • Up to nine paid holidays

(All insurance benefits begin after a 60-day evaluation period; PTO accrues immediately. Candidates must pass a background check and drug screening.)
