Customer: Tension Envelope Corporation
Air is the Guide to Quality Envelope Converting
As a leading provider of standard and custom envelopes, Tension Envelope Corporation is not your ordinary converter. Tension manufactures over 12 billion envelopes a year for customers worldwide. Envelopes vary in size and construction, from self-contained mailers to pull-tab envelopes to CD/DVD storage sleeves.
Controlling converting processes is key to maintaining Tension Envelope’s high customer satisfaction standards. According to Tension’s project engineer Mike Brazil, quality converting starts with accurately guiding of the web right off the unwind. Brazil knows that the web position can impact everything else down line, from trimming and folding to print registration.
Brazil has been using All-Air web guides from Coast Controls for a number of years. Using only common low-pressure plant air, this system provides remarkably effective web guiding without the use of electrical wiring and controls. Dust from envelope converting can also challenge ultrasonic and optical web guide sensors. All-Air web guide systems actually blow dust and contaminants away from the edge detector while sensing the web edge with opposing air pressures.
According to Brazil, however, it wasn’t the ease of setup and performance within a dusty environment that makes the All-Air web guide system so preferable. “It’s their durability and dependability – they’re flawless,” says Brazil. “You simply set them up and forget about them. And that helps support all the precision equipment used down line in our converting process.”
