Specify the Right Guide System for Your Application

All web guiding systems should be installed as close to the incoming side of the converting process where accuracy is needed. The location of the guide will determine if you will be using a Shifting Unwind Stand, Intermediate Displacement Guide, Intermediate Steering Guide, or a Shifting Rewind Stand.

Shifting Unwind Stand
A Shifting Unwind Stand or a Displacement Guide are compact, effective web guide options for correcting offset or poorly-wound unwinding rolls.

A Shifting Unwind Stand has the simplest web path, but requires lateral shifting of the unwinding roll along with a shifting idler roll (attached to the stand). The web sensor is fixed and mounted independently of the stand. Unwind stands provide for immediate web correction.

A Displacement guide positioned immediately downstream of the unwind stand adds to the web path complexity, but can effectively guide the web with a smaller actuator (without needing to shift the winding roll).

Ideal applications include:
• poorly wound rolls (i.e. telescoped rolls)
• when converting process begins with an unwinding roll

Note: The incoming material should be centered on the roll stand to maximize full advantage of the total stroke of the actuator.

Intermediate Displacement Guide
A Displacement Guide offers good guiding results in areas where space is limited and where minimum entry and exit web spans exist. These guides offer the most versatility of all guiding systems and should be considered the first choice for intermediate guiding applications.

Ideal applications include:
• label and narrow web applications (i.e. label presses)
• bag manufacturing, business forms production
• wider web applications (i.e. coating & laminating, slitter rewind, plastic film extrusion)

Intermediate Steering Guide
A Steering Guide is best used to control the position of a long web span entering a process.

Ideal applications include:
• envelope manufacturing, plastic film extrusion applications
• oven exit from flexographic printing press, belt guiding
• multi-wall bag manufacturing

Shifting Rewind Stand
During rewinding, the web needs to be centered or aligned to the winding core. Successive layers should align to previous wound layers. Shifting Rewind Stands or Displacement Guides are compact, effective web guiding options for aligning the web to the core and previously wound layers.

A Shifting Rewind Stand is the simplest option in winding perfect rolls. It provides edge position control by shifting the rewind stand (and attached sensor) to “chase” any web misalignment as the roll is winding. A fixed idler is required between the sensor and the rewinding roll.

A Displacement Guide can effectively guide the web during rewinding while using a smaller actuator and without shifting the winding roll. Using a displacement guide immediately upstream of the winder adds to the web-path complexity, but can still be an elegant solution to winding perfect rolls.

Ideal applications include:
• Converting applications ending with nicely wound rolls
